Best Time To Scout

The season is over for most of us here in New York. Some of us are happy about how it transpired. While some of us are wore out and disappointed about the lack of success we may have experienced. We want to throw in the towel and get back to normal life without stressing over deer hunting. I urge you to change your habits this year and be proactive. If we want to change our results next season, we must change what we do during the off season.

There is no better time to scout your property than right after the season ends. The sign is fresh and the deer are still in their fall and winter habits. It is a great time to reflect on your successes as well as your failures. We should ask ourselves these following questions. What were our goals for the season? Did we reach those goals? If we didn’t reach them, what prevented us from doing so? How can we change our property to be more successful next year? These are the questions that need to be addressed and answered to change our results.

When walking your property focus on the current sign that you see. Look for bedding areas and take note of those locations. Keep in mind recent weather conditions and how that may affect these locations. Look for rubs and scrapes and how they relate to food and bedding. Keep in mind land contours and how the deer follow these contours. Brainstorm ideas on how you can enhance these movements. Defining them can lead to more success next season. Focus on deer browse and what they seem to be attracted to. Gather all of this information and create a plan that will help you enhance their movements and define their daily habits. This will help you set up spook free access and stand locations. Which is the most important aspect of all hunting parcels.

Many of us are seasonal. What I mean by this is we are focused on a certain hobby for a particular part of the year and don’t think about it again until the following year. Now there is nothing wrong with this and for most of us it helps us not get wore out and lose interest in a particular hobby. However, if we end every deer season asking ourselves “what went wrong?” and don’t take action in the off season to change that. We will always see the same results. This is the year that you can change that and take action. Follow along as we give insight on habitat improvements and hunting strategies that can lead to more success. Give us a call for your free consultation to learn how we can help you change your hunting experience. Whitetails of New York is changing the game. Your success is our success.
